So many things wrong with what's going on in HK.
A news agency has more say in the runnings of HK affairs than the government, twisting words in the basic law to suit their needs. A chief executive who is a complete puppet. Carrie Lam promises jobs to DAB members who lost in last year's elections and gave some of them jobs recently. A police force that has no legal duty to care for the people, only to serve the state, and currently get away with doing illegal things. The whole government has a directive to purge any opposition which they keep saying they don't do - their actions suggest otherwise. So much fake news - they say the protestors want independence which is not the case, although there may be a few outliers. People getting disappeared in HK and appearing in China. A group of runners is considered an illegal assembly. Politicians and police officers openly collude with triads. Judges who give lenient sentences to stabbers depending on their political stance, slowly eroding the judicial independence and confidence in the HK judiciary system. American Journalists from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post have been banned from doing their jobs in HK - which is a huge blow to HK's press freedom. 1 million protestors marched peacefully, then 2 million protestors marched peacefully, the HK government still did not listen, what more right could HK people do? Now it has reached the point that the people of HK have very little say in HK's internal affairs, the HK government actively disregarding the people. Supporters of democracy have become second class citizens in HK.
Sooner or later there will be remnants of internet censorship in HK, there will be remnants of the social credit system, anyone criticising the HK gov or central government may be liable to prosecution, online voting for the district council and legislation council elections which will be rigged, etc.
There is no major demand for the anti mask law, national security law, national anthem law, or extradition bill - it is all politically motivated to give the CCP more power. People don't trust the CCP but it seems that the HK government would never admit it, even though it is the truth. The HK government clamping down on rights and freedoms slowly by slowly, ruining HK more than any protestor could.
Your post reminds me of an article published in the SCMP back in March 2017. This was before the anti-extradition protests of course. But it already predicted the current impasse we have now. Its an interesting "what if" scenario if HK was better goverened by leaders who take into account all HKers, rather than the elite, things might have been different and better:
