I actually agree with you on the likely possibility of underreporting in Italy. There are also definite variations in the protocol and amount of testing going on. Given the amount of mutations that happen with coronaviruses, besides the demographics, another possibility is strains varying in virulence. Plus China underreporting fatalities more to begin with.

Fake? (Genuinely don’t know.)
The answer is I don’t know. Were they cancelling second lines, business accounts? Point is the figures are definitely shocking and indicative of something, but it’s too soon and too implausible to rush to the conclusion that millions are missing.

In case you thought it couldn’t get any creepier.
Interesting chart on coronavirus tests per capita- Japan is not testing very much, South Korea is leading the way...
Sorry need to take issue with that. Irrespective of the older population in Italy there are some counties death rates that are way out of line with global averages even if you took 100 per cent of China cases out of that measurement.
Korea is the best measurement given the fantastic job they have done on testing. Even if they are 100 per cent out and a margin that’s 1.75 to 2 per cent mortality rate maximum.
Europe’s figures are skewed not by bullshit figures from China but by their lack of comparable testing.
And a slow response. Early detection is key to reducing death rates. Antiviral drugs are most effective during the early stages of infection. China weeded out cases like there's no tomorrow. WHO even said that the Chinese are very good at keeping people alive during the critical stages.
