    Covid-19: 04/06 (Mon) HK News

Outbreak news for Monday. And I'll start with a positive piece of news. The travel and hospitality industry has taken a beating in general, but there is one hotel in HK that has been doing really well in spite of the outbreak:

The white elephant HK-Macau-Zhuhai bridge sees traffic plunge 90% due to the virus. And the bridge was hardly busy to begin with. Interestingly, data shows traffic had started to drop from May last year, well before this pandemic and the protests, raising a question on the very purpose of the bridge. If traffic was falling even before all these negative events, then there is no demand for vehicular traffc to begin with. Then why build the bridge?

Hey, we're all one country now. Of course we needed a bridge.

BTW, I tried the bus to Macau once. Even though there were no queues and the journey went smoothly, I chose to return by ferry. The bus journey took longer and was more cramped. No seat allocations. No sense of occasion. Similar price. Won't be doing the bridge again.

For the same reason countries host the World Fair and the Olympics. It's shiny, it's brand new, it catches the world's attention and highlight a nation's achievements. Unfortunately unlike a pavilion from the World Fair it's a bit harder to disassemble

More seriously, wasn't it for cargo trucks or something like that? But then government requirements on using the bridge made it uselessly complicated?

Meanwhile in another reality, or city state rather: Cash handouts coming your way starting as early as April! Wow isn't it incredible how it doesn't take a year and a half?
