Why not just do away with elections and have everyone appointed by Beijing. No one buys the credibility on what's left of the "election process" anyway.

I don't get why they do this... They are already 100% in control. Why does it matter if some local district councillors who are involved in a new bus route at the most are a bit more pro or against the party line?

Never any offer to society, never listening to anyone but their own circle. The only thing they know is to clamp down, even if it is completely unnecessary, as now.

You are thinking about responsive governance in democracies. Here its the logic of authoritarian governance. When opposition occurs, the inclination is to crush it. Not to address their concerns.

That is why there will never be true long-term stability in HK. Control based on suppression is not stable over the long term.
