    BA Suspends HK Flights

    And some flight suspensions...

British Airways is to temporarily suspend passenger flights to and from Hong Kong, the Post has learned, after more of its aircrew were sent to a government quarantine camp.

Two separate sources on Saturday evening said the British flag carrier had taken the decision after at least one of its aircrew members tested positive for Covid-19 on arrival at Hong Kong International Airport on Saturday, leading to most of the BA staff on the flight being taken to Penny’s Bay quarantine centre on Lantau Island.

Health officials also refused to allow the crew to return to Britain on an empty flight instead.
What's the rationale behind preventing close contacts testing negative from leaving HK?

Presumably to encourage thorough testing before flying to HK.

That makes no sense because close contacts had a negative PCR test in the UK and a negative PCR test in HK. How much more thorough do you think it should get?

Well, they could move to a virtual pilot and crew.

I can see more flights being cut between now and for any long haulers that aren’t doubling up pilots and crew so don’t have to leave the plane. . None of them want to risk being stuck in Penny Bay for Christmas and who can blame them?

There is a gap in the market here for Boeing to sponsor quarantine insurance for flights to Hong Kong for anyone desperate enough to fly there in a revamped 737-Max

I can see the only ones left with long haul flights will be that few weekly CX to 2-3 airports in NA and Europe each and then Qatar and emirates. Everyone else won’t bother to operate in these conditions anymore.

Finnair crew to PB today too. So expect some Finnair cancellations.
