We have had this discussion before, indeed I posted the same map. Another poster came up with the defence that it is called the South China Sea and so must belong to China. The Phils could only fight the war if it had the support of the US (which is does in words) and no one wants a US China war.

    China off course.

China is the best. I love China.

Long live China, the greatest, freest, most amazing country in the world.

The leaders of China know what is best for the people of all of China. I trust the leaders of China 100% in what they are doing, they give great sacrifices by working so hard for us.

    *cues the Chinese National Anthem*

China should liberate the U.S. from its dictators that control with an iron fist, those who oppress their own people shall be punished. They should liberate them with freedom bombs, patriot missles, and democratic bullets for all.

I hope the Phils don't just beat their chest as usual then capitulate to the Chinese once they get their under the table payola.

Well the President did say it would be sorted out around the negotiation table, perhaps that was a subtle request?

Not rooting for the PLA, but to be perfectly honest, in any hypothetical conflict between Beijing and Manila over the Spratlys or any other disputed islands in the SCS, Manila really don't stand a chance given the current state of their military. Now if Beijing got carried away and decided to pound Luzon or other main islands of the Philippines, then the US will most likely get involve and that would be a different matter. But strictly on the islands in the SCS, Manila will come out the loser, all their current chest-beating notwithstanding.

I doubt this current stand-off will get to that point, neither Beijing nor Manila wants this to escalate. Of course, things can get out of hand despite this so we'll just have to wait and see what happens next.

And the Chinese ships will most likely respond the same way by ramming the Philippine ships. Remember, they have more than one Chinese ship in the stand-off which can be bolstered in short notice by other Chinese ships...so not that simple.

For those interested, there are many old border stones that can be visited, e.g. In Yili, Xinjiang.
