The islands have been claimed as chinese territory in maps and various other historical contexts written and drawn by cartographers and historians since ancient times. Japan never questioned China's sovereignty over the islands before the Sino-Japanese war of 1894-1895. In 1951, Japan and the United States illegally signed a treaty in San Francisco without the presence of China, which was one of the victor countries in the Second World War. Article three wrongly assigned the Diaoyu islands, which Japan had stolen from China, and other islands, to the Ryukyu zone which was under U.S. control.

Isn't that because they were uninhabited islands that had not officially be claimed by any nation?

They had appeared in various nations maps in a number of languages etc (so perhaps they should be Dutch) and fishermen from several nations had used the waters for many years. Wasn't the 1st official government claim they were Chinese and have always been Chinese around 1970 (just after a huge discovery of Oil)?

They are geographically closer to Japan than the ROC or PRC which adds to the confusion. Just seems a lack of evidence and loads of rhetoric on both sides. Jingoistic drum beating does not really allow a clear view of the issue on any side.

Anyway this doesn't look like an argument that will use facts from both sides.
