    Great leap forward?

    Cultural revolution?

Why don't we have tight government controls in Hong Kong? isn't there a risk of turmoil in this city?
    Ok 30 years then!

HK is too small a City and the level of education in HK is greater than those on the Mainland. With a peasant population of 100s of millions, this could erupt into something nasty.
In the early 20th century a civil war broke out due to an uprising by uneducated peasants supporting someone who claimed to be Jesus's younger brother. Over 20 Million dead.

Was Ni Yulan calling for the overthrow of the institutions? Or a lawyer defending property rights?
This is clearly wrong as are some other actions that have been taken. These are clearly over the top and should be condemned.

I think that the Chinese Government knows what needs to be done. They are not closed to criticism and we clearly see improvements. But criticism resulting in the loss of face is very much an Asian trait and something that foreigners will not understand. We do see things changing rapidly
However China cannot change overnight as we had seen with the Great Leap Forward as it needs to carry 3-4Billion people with them.

That's the population of China plus about 1.7-2.7 billion other people? Who are they?

Loss of face is a human trait. greater freedom of the press helps societies in having good governance. No Freedom of the press help totalitarian regimes keep face....

Are you suggesting that current governance of the country is so bad that if the fear of the CCP was lifted e.g. a few press there would be civil war? Interesting but damming view point

Yes, we can trust the Chinese Government! Same way we trusted them in 1989! Same way as they were trusted during the Great Leap Forward!

And foreigners, whatever you say, you are wrong, BeijingITperson is right. Foreigners just don't understand the Chinese.

A point which has not been made yet is that the CCP's internet governance is denying its people full access to the internet and outside news sources, and in doing so are actively denying people of news and information, and are actively engaging in disinforming and misinforming the majority of its population who cannot or do not have the knowledge to break through the Great Firewall. Hence there is an active policy to keep people not educated or in the dark about a whole range of issues or historical facts.

These comparisons with NSA are also incredibly hypocritical as ,say, in the US the internet is not censored to the insane level of China, and people can acces any outside news source they desire. If a Snowden happened in China, rest assured the 2million+ army was on the case to make sure such an affair would not be known to the average Chinese. In the US it could be reported anywhere and every US citizen is free to inform himself.
