Chinese student's English text book

I took Chinese classes twenty years ago in Shanghai. All of the lessons sang the praises of Chinese society and one specifically touted how well fed (吃得好) and well dressed (穿得好) the peasants are. It still sticks in my memory.

Yes, common to patent a new use for a known medication (we do it all the time, find some herb, for example that is known in Chinese medicine, has anti-HIV properties- the patent is for the "method of use"...).

May be doing it purely to prevent Gilead from doing it...as patent filing are not published until 18 months, why else publicize the application?

And can even patent using a new combination of known antivirals (like mixing Tamiflu with anti-HIV drugs). Going to bet that's been applied for as well...

It is true about investment- no drug company will spend all the money for clinical trials and such without patent protection.

US also had a strong patent system in the 19th century when so many fundamental mechanical inventions were made...
