No one now flees to Hong Kong and the HKSAR Gov no longer seem to deal with those that have (except allow then to be triad foot soldiers).

What does the UNHCR now do in HK?

Loads of people still flee (or are trafficked) in this direction. Corona virus has temporarily stopped air travellers, but there are still thousands here who are waiting for assessment of claim or resettlement - the latter cases are also on indefinite hold because of The Virus.

Western news services are so wrapped up in our first world problems and gossip that you really have to know where to look to see information about the horrendous conditions in places like Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Mozambique, Cameroon, Myanmar, Kyrgistan, Russia, West Papua, Venezuela ... sometimes the whole country is in turmoil; sometimes it is just particular minorities (ethnic or religious) getting slammed.

The local UNHCR office also deals with refugees and refugee claimants who have fetched up in Macau.
