Out of interest do we have a rough idea how much of HKs current cases are asymptomatic so we can use that multiple against China’s official figure. Not that I believe those figures for symptomatic cases but it might paint a different picture

If you were Chief Executive aka HK Mayor, what would you have done differently at the outset of Omicron here to stop this mess?
The "done differently" needed to happen before omicron. Basically, we should have mandated vaccines in everyone over the age of 70 last September after the farting aound with lotteries failed. At minimum, mandated vaccines for all care home residents. And implemented the vaccine pass back then, stringently.

At the start of Omicron - assuming failure in the above - we should have sequestered all the unvaccinated over 70's in isolation facilities. If they lived alone, at home. (with wristbands and fines for leaving). If they lived in decent care homes, basically locked al the staff in the care home and not allowed anyone in or out. And everyone else in the isolation facilities. They should have immediately switched all the travel quarantine hotels to "old people isolation" and moved travel isolation to home quarantine. (And basically vaccinated everyone on the way into isolation; and second dose in 3 weeks, so that in 5 weeks eveyone can come out and be sorted).

Wouldn't even have had to mandate anything. Simply tying the first 5-6K payment to vaccination status would have gotten the city to >90% in the blink of an eye.

I'm sure that most of us have wondered at one time or another why this wasn't done from the first batch.

It's even worse than you think. Those stools are not for queuing - they are for use to navigate the water on the floor below. Apparently there is a water leak and no-one knows if the water is in any way contaminated.

Glad we got the experts involved.

There is no wondering - It's all politics.

The old are the govts support base and they wouldn't push them.

If you noticed they only started really ramping up the vaccine messaging at all immediately after the sham election.

They wanted the votes of the old tricks and continue to want their support in future - that's all there is to it.

There were many levers that could have been pulled. I saw suggestions of extra funding for fully vaccinated care homes.

But then it might have been a problem for people like me overseas to get our $5k handouts with foreign government vaccine certificates
