Who says zero Covid is dead. There will be no lying flat, even if they have to make the stiffs stand.

Sort of makes sense...
'the National Health Commission had recently revised its guidelines to “scientifically and objectively reflect deaths caused by the coronavirus pandemic”, classifying only fatalities caused by pneumonia and respiratory failure in patients who had the virus as Covid deaths.'
Although this is interesting...
'He said that compared with the first outbreak of Covid-19 in early 2020, when most patients died of respiratory failure, “the main cause of death from infection with Omicron is the underlying diseases. Respiratory failure directly caused by the new coronavirus infection is rare.” '

Maybe you should tell Dr Owen that.

IF these statistics are accurate, it suggests you may use a 5/3 ratio to adjust your estimates of Singapore’s covid toll. The disparity still seems fairly large if we can take it (the excess deaths number) at face value.
Monthly or quarterly stats on excess deaths are about the only measure worth paying attention to for meaningful comparison across all dimensions of impacts, but that's too boring for the daily news cycle.
It'll take quite a bit of number fiddling for China to hide excess deaths but I'm sure they will find a way to stick a balancing figure of 1 million into the population count somewhere.
Very very critical view of China's handling of COVID in the SCMP:

Funny how you could find/replace that whole article Beijing to Hk and 3 years to 2.5 years and it all applies. And yet SCMP and the rest went very easy on the muppets throughout the 5th wave and left it to Ben Cowling and Co to eviscerate them on twitter.
Media seem more scared of the NSL being applied in HK than they are of criticising Beijing directly.
