FT: 20 Days - 250M Covid Infections in China

Chinese officials estimate about 250mn people, or 18 per cent of the population, were infected with Covid-19 in the first 20 days of December, as Beijing abruptly dismantled restrictions that had contained the disease for almost three years.

The estimates — including 37mn people, or 2.6 per cent of the population, who were infected on Tuesday alone — were revealed by Sun Yang, a deputy director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in a Wednesday health briefing, said two people familiar with the matter.

Sun said the rate of Covid’s spread in the country was still rising and estimated that more than half of the population in Beijing and Sichuan were already infected, the people briefed on the meeting said.

Don’t worry, everything is fine. Only 7 deaths in the last 2 weeks which is completely believable when cases are in the hundreds of millions. Chinarrr’s strategy still far superior over the West’s, as claimed by Pooh bear and his cronies.

Omg ;_; These estimates and numbers being tossed ard are outrageous, they are ballparking, guesses at best. If true, everyone in China or at least qingdao will have covid before 2022 ends..

Thx to china's usual media policy, being censored makes it look like the truth 😓 but it isn't just a china/ccp problem, it's global. Individuals w varying degrees of worry abt covid and also happen to be working in health orgs, govt and journalism all forgetting to put on their professional hats.. that's why everytime there's some sort of official relaxation announcement, a slew of "don't let ur guard down /experts warn" counter articles will follow..

I can't believe ppl r still arguing over definition of covid death, there should be no room for argument at all medical-wise. Did you die with covid or of covid, likewise with pneumonia - otherwise how do ppl claim from insurance. It miraculously continues to be in flux only cuz everyone trying to get the stats to look favorable for their cause.

Anecdotally these numbers make sense. Practically everyone I know and their family/social groups is positive.

Was always going to happen once zero was dropped. Would have been better for everyone if it had happened much earlier.
