Taiwan Elections: Foxconn Terry Gou announces run...

Was not on my list of billionaires who would want to run for elections...

The billionaire founder of tech giant Foxconn, Terry Gou, has announced he will run for president of Taiwan as an independent candidate, pledging to fix cross-strait relations and boost Taiwan’s economy.

At a press conference on Monday, Gou – a well-known and outspoken businessman – announced what he called “the era of entrepreneurs’ rule”.

“I have decided to join the 2024 presidential race,” he said, touting his business and finance experience, including dealings with China.

“Give me four years and I promise that I will bring 50 years of peace to the Taiwan Strait and build the deepest foundation for the mutual trust across the strait … Taiwan must not become Ukraine and I will not let Taiwan become the next Ukraine.”

How will he fix the Taiwan / China issue for 50 years? What major concessions to Beijing does he plan?

You should know better than ask billionaires for detailed plans ...

He seems genuine. But commenting Taiwan similar to Ukraine wont bode well with China. Meaning keeping peace would be even harder? haha

Where else might you find an example of an agreement to keep the peace and the status quo for 50 years? Not a single example occurs to me.

Umm, he lost the primary, so guess going for 3rd party, whatever. Not really sure how primaries work, whether vote or some internal party thing.

So he will split the vote for that party, like all 3rd party candidates in 2-party systems.

Ah, yes, KMT are pissed off, apparently he had promised to support their guy, oh well.

And TSMC, which is what they want.

Taiwan (and this guy, in particular) has said that any invasion/bombing, etc. will shut down the semiconductor production because, seriously, any little thing and that ginds to a hault.

    The "silicon shield."

Still, if the bombs start dropping, pretty sure I will head over to the Hsinchu area, feels like that won't be a target (semiconductor land here).

That's where the US will bomb first. The CIA would not risk anyone else getting that tech.
