“Our action regarding Taiwan reinforces our commitment to stability in the region,” State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said in Washington on Saturday. “We know China has a different view. Given our broad relationship with China, we will manage this issue as we have in the past.”
Well now. Didn't think President Obama had it in him to stand up to China's bullying. Nice one.

One other thing. Is there ever a time or issue where China isn't bitching about something? They're like the kid who gets upset when people that he considers to be his friends hang out with people he doesn't like.

Isn't that a bit like, the pot calling the kettle, black ?

Or is it just fortunate, that China can defend itself against the USA, should it want to democratise it, like it's doing so successfully, in Iraq ?

If you stick your hand in enough hornets nests, you're going to get stung, eventually...

Democratise? What on earth gave you the idea that America is backing Taiwan to defend itself against China??!

Hello, this isn't foreign aid. It's a deal worth 6.4 billion of much needed dollars. Tax needs to roll in from somewhere. The American gummint has bills to pay.

fully agree on this. it's quite annoying and about time to tell them (aka the government not the people).

i quite liked the german foreign minister westerwelle who went to china and just told them how it is. being a gay himself, he probably felt personally insulted by china's stance on some issues

Well, I am sure that they will have something to say if arms were sent to Cuba. Remember the Bay of Pigs?

    Apples and bowling balls.

The US does not need a weapons store house of their own in Taiwan, nor is it intended to be a launch point for staging an attack on China.

The bases in South Korea and Japan could serve either purpose okay.

The USA are one of the biggest b#tchers in the world!

What do you expect China to say when this sale is announced.

The PRC government has an absolute line in the sand on Taiwan and this is to them a poke in the eye.

To the USA it is business for their military supplier industry as noted above.

It is also based on their congressional support of Taiwan which has been in place for many years.

If this was China selling weapons to Mexico or Cuba do you think the Americans would not be decrying actions like that?

As to the comments about allowing China to become this big so fast these statements are ludicrous. The USA wanted cheap goods and their companies like WalMart drove down the prices and their manufacturers went offshore to China and other low cost nations and this is the result.

Obama if he can do it is right to provide tax incentives to produce more at home but no one 'allowed China to grow' the same as no one can stop them from growing and becoming an economic power. At the same time as these nations grow like China, they build up their military.

The good news is that the have nations have never gone to war against other since the end of World War 2. The haves have fought the have nots and mostly the have nots each other proving that Bob Dylan got it right when he sang something like 'when you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose.'

The irony here is that if Taiwan ever decided to form a SAR type relationship with China formally, these weapons and planes would become part of overall China's defense system kind of like the US aiding the Afghan rebels fighting the USSR where now the US is fighting them.

A well-armed Taiwan, no. A well-armed China, yes. Just last week China was demanding that the EU lift its arms embargo.

China's position on the EU arms embargo against China has been consistent and clear. We believe that the embargo is in essence political prejudice against China, which runs counter to the current world trend and the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership. We demand the lifting of the embargo in order to eradicate the political prejudice and ensure China's equal rights.

I guess political prejudice and equal rights do not apply to Taiwan.

You really think China would do that? China relies on the USA and the USD. If they both collapsed, China would be severely effected - and you don't want 1.3b people upset at their government.

I think China is just being the spoilt child, yet again. Ok, they may not be happy with it, but they need to deal with it in a proper manner - not making their CCTV presenters bark out the same "We are China and we don't like what you are doing" line. There is a right way and and wrong way to do this - and China just hasn't worked which is which.

Then Obama is going to meet the DL - oh, yeah, the China Government have plenty to say on that also.

But, if China does anything offshore, they warn other countries not to meddle in their affairs.
