All these confused/confusing perspectives arising from 1) giving value to complexity for its own sake (primarily academics and commentators) 2) the misplaced sense that there is some sort of equivalence (where the state does not allow, or punishes you when you voice your own [true] views)To me, freedom is individually driven, the ability to pursue whatever you want. I realised that I had internalised an Americanised definition of freedom, and I was surprised at our guide’s differing Chinese perspective. He told me he “feels truly freeâ€, through a collective ideal for “societal unity and harmonyâ€. He explained he was taught in primary school that his actions reflected the national flag, and therefore they should benefit the greater good.
