What did Hong Kong do to become so uncool?

What did Hong Kong do to become so uncool? | South China Morning Post

There are probably many reasons but probably the top two for me are

    1) Constant TV coverage in the Mainland saying Hong Kong is an ungrateful and obnoxious city
    2) Only new policy of any impact in the 17 years has been the single tourist visa debacle. The rest is stagnation.

Obviously there is the K-Wave and many countries now fight for attention where 30 years ago Hong Kong was a beacon of liberty and social freedoms. The Mainland hasn't really eclipsed Hong Kong as the Major cities of Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou are still not that nice in relative terms to other global cities.

Why do you think Hong Kong is now so un-cool?

When has HK ever been cool?

It is/was a major business place with a special vibe (ie small markets in middle of central, sampan, tram etc etc and island/nature at ur doorstep) but cool???

    Hong Kong was cool...

    Kai Tak Airport
    Kowloon Walled City
    Kung Fu
    Dim Sum carts
    Street Food
Good shopping (Not luxury) people used to come here for a few days to stock up on tech.
It's all gone now...the soul has been sucked out of it...

It all stopped in the late 1980's as everyone started looking to 1997.

In the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s Hong Kong was a place to go. When the rest of China were living in squalor and getting worse Hong Kong was building institutions to allow society to work efficiently.

They were also throwing up homes such the one below from 1954.

While China was going through land reform

That our government is still throwing up the same style of tiny government housing as it did 25 years ago is very uncool.

True. For the price of housing here, the quality is extremely poor, and given the design of buildings I have been into, it seems as though property magnates would have HKers sleep vertically than the usual horizontal position. For them I guess, make as much money out of the limited groundspace while the sky is the limit! I noticed today in IKEA Sha Tin that the bathmats are now half the size of the original ones that they used to sell!
