Garden bakery headquarters to face bulldozers - RTHK

Sham Shui Po is full of ugly decrepit buildings so they will tear down one of the few that isn't.

HK seems to be allergic to physical preservation of the past in many forms...

Capitalism has chronic allergies. It really needs them tended to.

Just because a building is old doesnot necessarily make it Historically Significant Architecture. IMHO, the only thing that makes this particular building stand out in its class is that it has been kept cleaner than most.

    An opportunity lost.

Opposite is Mei Ho House - a youth hostel and museum. Nearby is the The Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre. If the bakery is no-longer needed, couldn't it be turned into a something that would complement these two buildings. Or, is an office building really needed?

I don't think it necessarily has to be 'historically significant' in order to warrant preservation, but it should be representative of a particular period in that particular district. It's nice to be able to visit different parts of a city and see various anchor points that tell us about a neighbourhood's past and see examples from different stages of the city's development over long periods of time and imagine how it once was.

The only thing worth preserving is that clock, which they are.
