Disrupting the airport brings major international publicity and economic pressure.

It also imposes a high cost and a lot of stress and inconvenience on a lot of people - they may be drawing more international attention to their cause but they are pissing off an awful lot of people who might otherwise have supported them in the process.

Hong Kong apartments are notoriously small, so having the protests at home is not an option.

Losing the hearts and minds is not a good thing.
Causing a bit of inconvenience is OK - lots of people can put up with that and sympathize.
Causing outright disruption that hits the pocketbooks badly, can badly backfire.

I think most normal people can understand that fighting for the future of Hong Kong isn't a cakewalk and that civil disobedience inevitably entails disruption - otherwise what's the point of it?
