Whatever happens, our hats are off to the protesters. It’s not easy standing up for democracy, and many Americans are with you, even if our idiotic president isn’t. Stay strong and stay safe.

I’ve got tickets with Cathy to Manchester for Christmas. Will they still exist. Should I start looking with another carrier?

Cathay Pacific now investigating which of its staffers may be behind the anonymous letter, which supported the ongoing protests & slammed the HK & China govts for their reactions. A huge U-turn from its earlier commitment to freedom & diversity of thought.

More than likely they will still be around. Swire is a huge conglomerate and CX has turned around from years of losses. They have more than enough cash flow to keep going for a while even if they return to losses in the second half.

Yes, the airline industry is a notoriously tough business with high fixed cost. CX has also made some self-inflicted mistakes like the oil hedge. But they still have able managers in its ranks and the fact they have endured prior downturns should indicate their stability. The fact that it is HK's flag carrier also means they enjoy cozy relations with the government.

Now does that mean it is the best carrier there is? No. Does it deserve your business given it essentially buckled under CCP pressure? Highly debatable. Does it deserve your business as it cut back on service quality in recent years? Well, if there is a better choice, I won't fly with CX myself. But those are separate considerations to the airline's continued existence. The carrier itself will very likely survive.

I am sitting in a Cathay lounge as I write this. Probably will be my last Cathay flight in a long while. It’s a shame: when I was much younger I’d always beg my parents to that Cathay for the summer flight back to see family instead of Air France. I’m not from HK but I’ve always been proud to choose to fly Cathay. They weren’t so bad after all. The European carries were stuck in a nasty cost cutting cycle and Cathay was modernising itself (yes on demand IFE came really late!).

They were never *the* best airline out there but I’ve always regarded them as *one* of the best. Service has gone down a lot recently but I still flew Cathay. They may have weathered their fuel hedging difficulties but have inadvertently gotten themselves into a much bigger political storm. It’s sad to see the airline meet its demise this way.

I think we should be a little careful distinguishing political pressure heaped on CX now and any potential failure due to lack of business and/or mismanagement. The two do not necessarily go together. CX is certainly going through some wild swings right now, but like I said, it is premature to conclude the airline will go under. In the last few years CX has cut cost down a lot, adopt a more proactive attitude in launching new routes and have phased out older more fuel inefficient aircraft. They are actually not in such a bad shape to ride out this political storm.
