Legionnaires' Disease Outbreak Hong Kong (as well)

on top of the novel coronavirus, there is a Legionella outbreak around Ping Shek/Choi Hung Area (nr Choi Hung MTR) nobody has reported it so far because the news is focused on novel coronavirus, ten confirmed cases so far.

Apparently also ignored on online forums as well.

It appears that the number of cases historically aren't epidemic sized:

But the fatality rate is high.

Anyway, just one more issue HK needs to deal with.

The good news: Legionnaires' Disease is not person-person communicable.

Also good: it's bacterial, and treatment with antibiotics helps.

The bad news: the bacterium loves warm, stagnant water. Most outbreaks typically get traced back to contaminated air conditioning condensation.

25 years ago, a family member of mine got it from air conditioner condensation drops hitting her on the head while simply walking down the street (not in HK). She was in the hospital for quite a while with bad pneumonia. It's not fun. Hence I get pretty pissed off in the summer here, what with all the "air con rain" we get. I usually wear a hat for protection.

The contaminated water source needs to be found and cleaned out. Hopefully that happens soon.

Thanks for the info. Hadn't heard about this particular outbreak.

Also, where's that celebrity HK Feng Shui Master who predicted that the worst is over for Carrie, that the unrest would continue but not as savage as the (year of the) pig?

Clearly this is the year of a new virus on the block.Rats please move over.

Clearly, the worst is not over yet. Carrie please move (out)! Lmao. So much for the feng shui.

13 Feb 2020 - media still has not mentioned the Legionnaires Disease outbreak

I was wondering if the fever awareness at the moment uncovered this outbreak.

    Press release from Feb 11

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (February 11) investigating a cluster of Legionnaires' disease (LD) cases, involving 10 patients, and stressed the importance of using and maintaining properly designed man-made water systems and that susceptible groups should strictly observe relevant precautions.

Further to the CHP's announcements on a cluster of LD cases on February 1, 3, 6, 7 and 10 involving seven male patients and two female patients aged 65 to 84, one additional LD case relevant to the cluster has been recorded today.

The male patient, aged 72 with underlying illness, lives in Tsuen Shek House, Ping Shek Estate, Kwun Tong. The patient's sample tested positive for Legionella pneumophila.

"Epidemiological investigations revealed that the patient had no travel history in the incubation period. Officers of the CHP have conducted site visits at Ping Shek Estate and have already collected environmental and water samples. Investigations are ongoing to identify potential sources of infection, if any," a spokesman for the CHP said.

On the current trajectory, won't be long before locusts and frogs show up.

There is mandatory testing of cooling towers in HK and the risk of this bacteria is generally under control. The HK Gov's guide to managing the bacteria are below. I would guess the risks will increase as the cities housing stock becomes more decrepit
