    Should I buy/adopt a dog?

Now don't get me wrong - I am no stranger to dogs, having grown up with canine family members.

However, I work. Nine to six. And I will be living alone soon when the husband goes away for two years to study in US.

And I don't have permanent help. Nor do I intend to get permanent help.

I yearn to buy/adopt a dog, but is it right? Since I will be out of the house Monday to Friday for nine whole hours? Halp!

Well, most dogs will sleep most of the day, around 18 hours. I take my dog to work and spend alot of time with him. He just sleeps in his bed for most of the day and only gets up to harass visitors which is about 6-8 times a day but if they didn't come in he would be snoring away!!

Dogs add great companionship for families and people by themselves. As you will not have anyone around for quite a while and you can't have relatives stay for extended periods I think a dog would be good.

Curious. Why do you think so? Is it because it's preferable if I get a slightly older dog, and not a puppy?

why should you adopt and not buy?

    1) puppy mills are terrible places. buying a dog would only perpetuate the cycle.
    2) adopted dogs tend to be healthier than dogs bought from an unscrupulous petshope
    3) if you are always at work and don't have time to train a puppy (a lot of work), then an older dog would probably be more suitable

but from the sounds of things, getting a dog is the wrong thing to do in your situation

I know that would be easier. But, I want a dog. I am sure cats are a joy to have, but I really really want a dog. Always have.

Also, I would be on familiar grounds with a dog. I have fed and petted stray cats, but I have never had one live in my house.

yes, having a dog is great fun and they are wonderful companions. but they are a lot of work. don't gloss over that simply because you will miss your husband.

T8, you have to walk the dog.
