if you are looking to board your dog in hk for 2 months, there are a lot of options open to you. there are some excellent kennels, some nice (and very expensive) dog hotels and other places (like us) that do home boarding. we have dogs come and live in our home with us and the other dogs in our care. they get to play and have fun, get regular exercise and be socialised, with both humans and other dogs.

so, don't let the idea of "kenneling" your dog put you off either.

as for gold coast.... sorry, i don't know much about the area as we currently live in sai kung.

Gold Coast is pretty dog friendly - in fact there seems to be some kind of "dog walking group" that operates in the area because twice now I have run into a group of people + dogs hiking on the trails above the Harrow School!

You'd need to check the specifics of each apartment block - for example, I have never seen a dog inside Phase 2, so I'm guessing they are not allowed. (having said that, I did some cat-sitting there a few years back, but I think cats are easier to hide than dogs!). We live in the marina - many of the boats have dogs and they are technically not allowed, but a blind eye is turned.

There are beaches and hiking trails to walk the dog right by the area so that's no problem. But you will need a helper to do it while you are at work, it's really unfair on the dog otherwise.

My thought process is if I want to live somewhere and I can't bring my dog, I'm not going. Do NOT leave your dog in a quarantine facility. If the dog survives he/she will be severely traumatized. Nobody that thinks of possibly leaving their dog with a new owner should ever own a dog in my opinion. In 2010 I was working in different cities, traveling constantly. there was one constant, I took my little Chihuahua with me everywhere, no exceptions ! There are now options where you don;t have to worry about placing your dog in a quarantine facility. When I moved from HK to Japan (which has a 6 month quarantine period), my dog got all her shots and as long as she didn't leave HK in that 6 month period she was accepted into Japan. Perhaps it's the same in your case. If your dog ends up in Malaysia make sure he/she is in good hands and you trust that person. I have heard they have alot of animal abuse cases in Malaysia.

If everyone thought like that there would be no quarantine facilities and no dog lovers would ever change countries! I'm sure there are good and bad quarantine facilities just like there are good and bad kennels - just use some common sense and ignore the paranoid among us.

OMG seriously? quarantine facilities are there for a reason. they are to protect more than just your dog, they are there to protect other animals that may not have been exposed to the same illnesses to which your dog was exposed.

while they are not luxurious, they are not dungeons either. there are 2 quarantines in hk, spaces are limited, so your pet's travel plans may have to be altered in order to have accommodations at the facility if needed.

yes, to bypass the quarantine in japan, you can fulfill the criterea by leaving the dog in hk. (we've had a lot of dogs stay with us who were in that position). however, hk is not one of those countries. if they require quarantine, they require quarantine. there is no way around it, usually.

I had a friend who had two dogs die in a quarantine facility and one friend got his dog back and it was a mental case. I'm fully aware that quarantine facilities are there to protect other animals and people but there needs to be change. I would never put my dog in a quarantine facility under any circumstances. Other people think differently and they are free to make there own choices.

Thank you for all your comments, we still not have made a final decision. Our move to Hong Kong, we hope, is a long-term plan but it's just the first few months that will be difficult for the dog. Decisions, decisions...
