    My parents have always rescued dogs, ridgebacks from well respected breeders. I can state from experience that you can get the digestive intolerances, hip problems, and other benefits of a pedigree dog for free, instead of paying for it! Win-win situation.

    How about fostering a dog, perhaps a young one? Might be more demanding and can last longer than just dog sitting for a week and thus is more comparable. And who knows, maybe the dog grows on you and you decide to adopt it ...

    I'm not sure the rescue organisations would put a foster dog into this situation.
