Relocating to HK with 2 dogs

Hi- were going to be relocating to HK from the US with 2 dogs- do you know how long they'll be in quarantine if any time at all? Both are up to date on all shots...

Definitely nervous about bringing them but couldn't imagine life without them!

    thanks!

also it would be good to check out relocating costs and requirements for dogs from hk to the usa for reference...

some pet owners for some reason or another, have dogs in hk but are unable to bring their dogs with them when it's for them time go back to their home countries or when they are relocated somewhere else.

in my opinion, i just feel it's "unfair" for the dogs to be brought all the way over here, only to be dumped when their owners cannot bring them to their next destination.

also make sure that the place you are staying in hk allows dogs.

I would contact these guys and make sure all your papaerwork is truly up to date. There may be a charge but probably worth it.
Have you organised where you will live when you get here? With 2 dogs, even small ones, some of the flats will be very small but you will also lack open spaces to let them run.
We're up near Sai Kung with ours but were on Lamma. Discovery bay, Lantau, Tai Po and Gold Coast to name a few are also popular places for expats with dogs.

Hello BPeelman, I just moved to HK from NY in the beginning of March with my 8 year old Rottweiler. Here is the link to the pet transport company that I used (Animal Land - Pet Relocation. A Professional Pet Transportation Service). My company covered the cost some I'm not exactly sure of the price, but I'm assuming it was $4-$5k USD. There is no quarantine from the US to HK (and vice versa) provided all you paperwork is in order. I strongly suggest using a transport company as there are several requirements from both the US gov't and the HK Gov't. You may think your dogs are up to date on shots...but most likely you will nee to visit the vet a couple of times. Please feel free to Private Message me if you would like more details. PS, being nervous is normal - I know the feeling. But my boy got here in great shape and has adjusted wonderfully. PPS - most people will say to use Cathay Pacific for the transport (that's who I used.) Regards

More proof, if any was needed, that Cathay really has gone to the dogs!!

Thanks for all the info! We'll be on a company relo so we plan on using a pet transport co. which also sounds like it will help greatly with the paperwork.

We haven't made the trip out yet to look for housing so thanks for a couple of dog friendly mentions!

We relocated recently with our dog from the States with a pet relo company and all went well, no quarantine required! Just one warning -- our pet relo company initially advised us to send our dog via Amsterdam on what would have been a 2 day journey. Our vet said that a nonstop flight would be better and so we asked for one instead. We eventually learned that some companies prefer to fly through Amsterdam because it is less expensive than direct flights. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the tips! Obviously you found a dog friendly location to live in?
Where might that be? We're going over in May to check it all out so any suggestions are appreciated!

    Thanks again!

We brought our black lab from the states to HK in the middle of March, and everything went very well with a pet agency in NY. For sure there is no quarantine required in HK for pets brought in from USA. Our dog detoured from USA to Amsterdam, since the agency told us they tried to keep the dog in the crate less than 10 hours flying on the air (did not relized it was because of the cost saving issue ).

I would say in general Hong Kong is a sort-of dog friendly place, specially with small sized dogs. But indeed here is a crowded city without free greenland for doggies. In considering this, we chose to live in the far-away countryside place with a backyard in Tai Po. Still I have hard time finding greenfield where dogs are allowed unleased besides hiking in the mountain area...

I heard there are a couple public areas / beaches for dogs. I only found Sai Kung Beach though.

    Good luck for your moving.

we've had a lot of experience with our clients using George at
International Pet Travel. We've always found him to be pleasant, accomodating and patient with the clients and the dogs. he's british chinese, i believe.
