    Moving Pets to HK

A friend of mine is planning to move to HK for about 2 years and he wants to tag his dog along. But this article claims that moving pets to HK can be real tough. Getting a licence and a lot of paperwork is okay, but what about Apartments, Parks etc? Are Pets allowed?

Some whole estates ban dogs (Deed of Covenant) and even if a building permits dogs, it is up to individual landlords as to whether their allow dogs in their properties.

Dog Parks - called Dog Gardens are available in a few places: http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/lsb/en/facilities.php?ftid=47

Dogs are not permitted on public beaches.

I was going through another thread where one guy from UK is in same situation as mine. People have advised him to move there 1-2 weeks before and arrange for the things. It is good?

We moved our dog after we had moved here and found a pet friendly apartment. You have to do it in two stages to get the most smooth outcome. You need someone to handle the move from home, ie: babysit the dog, take the dog for vet visits and documentation etc. And then you're in HK to pick them up from the cargo terminal upon arrival where they get checked, documents checked, and off you go.

We love having our dog here, but he's been used to smaller spaces and didn't have a backyard back home so wasn't that much of a change for him except for the humidity and summer heat!

There are several threads on this topic. We bought our baby out 3 wks after our arrival and its great. It's a very different lifestyle for him but he has adapted very well.

Moving a dog to Hong Kong is not easy but not very complicated. Overall, very doable.
We moved our dog and cat from Canada to HK about a year ago. And all went well, and our dog is a happy dog now.

    You can either:
    1. Hire a pet relocation company to do it, which will cost extra $
    2. Do it yourself

If you choose the latter, it is very doable, just needs a bit of planning.

As shared by others, just thoroughly understand the animal entry requirements, and complete the forms and veterinary requirements in time, and make sure to plan ahead.

As for apartments, a great way is to actually work with real estate agents, and tell them you want a pet friendly apartment. They will do all the work and provide you will lists of potential ones. Just browsing through the real estate websites that allows you to filter by 'pet friendly' may be misleading, as many owners are ok with pets or can be negotiated to be ok with pets, will often default as not allowing pets. Even the current place we are renting now did not officially advertise to be pet friendly. But we met with the owner, had a good rapport, and the owner was ok with it.

One thing to note is obviously lifestyle. Homes can be a bit smaller. Depending on where you live, there may be less grass. One thing that dogs will need to get use to is to do their business in concrete road instead of grass. It took our dog maybe 3 days to get use to it

    Hope this helps
