Keeping hardwood floors scratch-free with dogs?

I have two dogs and they love to play in the house together, and I have hardwood floors just before the balcony. They like to bolt outside and now their nails (properly groomed) over time are scratching up the floor. Is there anything I can do to protect the hardwood? What are your experiences?

As a pet owner, you should be worried more with the leg joints of your dogs slipping on the hard wood surface than scratching it.

@Proplus As a clueless new dog owner, do dogs wear these shoes in the summer when the pavement is too hot?

It's to protect their pads from the salt and other de-icers that are used in those climates. Playing in the back yard would be OK but a walk down the street would benefit from some foot protection.
