Bringing a dog from the U.S.

Bringing a dog from the U.S.

Does anyone have experience bringing a dog to Hong Kong from the United States? I am going back to SF in March to pick up my puppy who will be 5 months old and very concerned if he has to travel in cargo. He is a french bulldog and I am worried that he might get over heated in cargo. Any experience you can share would be greatly appreciated!

I flew my dog from SFO-HKG in October, 2010. It was one of the most stressful 24 hours of my life. I used a service and they were terrible. When I flew my dog back to SFO, I did everything myself with the exception of getting help for some of the legal paperwork and that worked out a lot better.

When I last was looking into shipping a dog (about 2012-13) Cathay would not ship flat-faced breeds.

Many airlines now forbid brachycephalic breeds, also known as short-faced or snub-nosed dogs, from their planes. That has caused great inconvenience for the owners of the affected dogs, which include popular breeds like pugs and bulldogs, but has opened a niche for a few companies that cater specifically to pet travel.

I think rules have changed lately. Because American Airlines website now says pets can only travel up to 12 hours.

A friend of mine did it, you can do it by yourself. I think these agencies do a little bit of overkill to charge extra. I have another friend getting pet passports and all that crazy jazz.

You should book a non stop flight and call the airline to arrange the pet fee. Get the approved crate. Get a rabies certificate, microchip the dog and usually you need some health certificate from the city/county/state that you live in (they need to be recently, there are some rules on the dates). I don't think here's that much more to it. My friend said on arrival to Hk you have to pick your pet up in cargo and no one knows exactly where it is so you get the horrid I don't know where little thompper is.

Some airlines only charge a couple hundred US so look around. Or you can hire an agent but I don't see how it helps. You still have to run around here and there.

Not an option when I brought my dog in. Dog was not allowed to travel in the cabin.

Probably terrifying. But the dog didn't tell any tales.

Have you read the AFCD on importing a pet?

I arrived in Hong Kong from New Jersey less then three weeks ago and brought my dog. You need to make sure you are very thorough about getting all of the paperwork done and reviewed by the AFCD bc otherwise they will put your dog into quarantine for up to four montgs. Your dog will need all of their immunizations be up to date including ranies (check AFCD site for specific list) and you will also need a pet permit issued locally before you arrive. I also had my dog microchipped with the HK specific 9 digit chip to avoid troubles. Make sure all forms note your dogs chip number and the dog has an hk approved chip.

Regarding french bulldogs, they obviously have breathing issues. I used Uniteds Pet Safe which offers climate controlled cabins for the dogs but I'm not sure they wil, take bulldogs. The one thing to consider is you may want to try and fly during winter when the weather is less oppressive for the dog as they could spend time sitting on tarmac.

Definitely can not bring in the cabin. Quarantine can be up to 6 months, although likely to be less. With proper paperwork pick up after flight.

As it's a new puppy rather than a family pet perhaps consider adopting here instead ? Many families needed and you save a lot of hassle and a dog a lot of stress.
