What pet Insurance did you get for your dog in Hong Kong (corgi puppies)

    Hi geoexpat community,

I'm wondering about some of your personal experiences with the insurance companies here in HK for your pet. I'm still deciding between the following
    1. bluecross
    2. FWD
    3. happy tails

    Appreciate any insight, thank you.

We looked at this and my conclusions were:

    - Did not see anything that covered major illnesses / conditions
    - Covered regular stuff, which can be self insured (i.e. the cost of the premium is higher than the actual out of pocket costs)

If any of these cover major illnesses / issues, please correct me.

Please avoid Manulife. They tried to screw us big time. Long story - sadly, our beloved flabby tabby BSH cross, whom we insured is now deceased, but Manulife were a rip off. We never even have insured our first beagle ( Not my first dog but the first that both my husband and I have. Now we also have a second beagle/ cross rescue.) , nor our second. We just read up on the premiums, and try to keep our dogs healthy as possible. Put aside from our earnings a certain amount for the dogs in case of emergencies. This has worked better in our favour. What Manulife asked for each month, we put aside in our savings.

It is the major illnesses as Shri said that will cost a lot so best to put aside as you will only recoup not even half of the costs of your pet's medical bills. These insurance companies - as we found out with Manulife - will analyse your annual bills and conditions of your pet, demand vet reports and then subtract certain conditions that are seen as reoccurring so that eventually the policy will be worthless, except in death which they will try to get out of relating it to your pet's current medical condition. As an example, our cat was FIV+. So, Manulife decided that ALL medical issues were linked to FIV+ and we were hounded to renew our policy that resulted in claims rejected because the insurers assumed that any condition was related to FIV when it was not. So, in the end we told them to piss off and saved more money in the end. Although I was working full time, and then we adopted a rescue beagle ( adopted another beagle/ cross in Singapore, now moving both with us to Sweden in January) , but I kept up with our cat's medical care ( self administered ) and improved diet.
However, I have heard good things about Blue Cross.

All you can do is read the fine print thoroughly. Have friends and even your boss or someone cynical and analytical read the fine print, terms and conditions.

Look up the company reviews online. I.E. Time to handle claims, efficiency and empathy of care. elimination and addition of 'special clauses' .

I know a lot of corgis in my 'hood. Plus I have boarded corgis before at my place. Read up on their congenital conditions as in health issues and work towards avoiding these with your vet. Keep them on the healthiest diet you can afford and exercise as much as they can whilst young. Also socialisation. Corgis are very sociable dogs. They need to get out and meet and play which keeps them happy and healthy and fit. Kennel Van Dego in Sai Kung, I do recommend.

I hope it all goes well with you.
