    Problems renting with pets?

    Hello,

My husband and I will be moving to Hong Kong early next year. We will be bringing a cat with us from the UK.

Does anyone know if it's problematic to find rental accommodation that allows pets? I have heard that many building managements have a strictly no-pets policy.

We are considering living in Pokfulam. Does anyone have experience of finding rental accommodation there with pets?

    Thank you!

Assuming your cat is just going to stay within the apartment (and that is how cats live here) then I don't think it would be a major problem anyway - it's dogs that can be a problem.

there is never restriction on cats - as far as i know.
there are some property with dogs restriction but a judge had said that violates the peoples rights to have dogs so they no longer apply.

    Your source for that assertion?

    Hi

We looked at several places in Pok fu lam and lots of other areas, none had any objection to us having a cat.

You have a lot of options for keeping pets in Pokfulam apartments. Bel Air and Baugio Villa (both large developments) allow animals. Individual landlords sometimes will prohibit them in these two places, but I would expect not too common (just a guess really, but I know people with dogs in both places and have looked myself at a number of apartments there that allowed pets). There are also many older low and mid-rise apartments throughout Pokfulam where pets are permitted, again subject to the landlord's okay.

Once you find a place that works, be sure to get a clause in your lease that specifically allows pets - several of the standard form leases floating around HK exclude them...

There was a court case a while back on this, but I can't remember the details. I think the ruling was very limited - to a specific building and may have involved a former public housing estate. Let me ask some of the HK lawyers at work if they remember more details.

Any landlord can prohibit pets residing in their individual unit - its a matter of contract between the landlord and tenant.

Quite a few buildings in addition to all public housing estates prohibit keeping pets of any kind, which is currently perfectly within their rights under HK law.

Pls refrain from such broad-reaching statements which are just wrong and can be quite misleading to those asking for reliable advice.

Whilst you might be allowed to keep a pet (and many do) it might not be practical. Cats would be far, far easier than dogs but you aren't going to be able to let the cat out much so it'd better like staying in.

No offense, but what does practicality have to do with keeping your pet (in many people's view also a family member) with you when you move? OP asked about places to live with a cat because presumably they have made the decision to move their pet along with their household, as many expats do.
