Cost per day in Hong Kong

    Hi Guys,

I've already done some reading around about this but wanted to hear what some of the experts think. How much you think it costs per day in Kong for the standard tourist? Staying at 3 star hotels, eating a mix of local food and moderately priced western restaurants and enjoying the odd beer. I was thinking somewhere around HK$900 per day, including accom. Is that realistic?

    Cheers,
    Jeff

Well, your biggest cost will be the hotel. Many three stars are around your daily budget for one night but you should be able to find one around 600HKD. You can easily get a chinese meal for 30-40HKD but an average western meal will be closer to 100HKD although there are plenty of good deals for set lunch or early dinners at slightly below that price.

So yes it's possible but you probably won't be living it up...

Yup taking the hotel room out of the equation

Lunch for one, Eating local $35 -$45 for a lunch set, Which usually includes Soup, Main dish and a drink. If you're on a tight budget then go after 2 p.m where its the tea set and slightly smaller but around $25 to $30.

Dinner will be the same for Chinese, Western yes its going to be around $100 upwards.

Beers outside of happy hour then look for $50 or so, Happy hour can either be 10% off or buy one get one free and usually before 8 p.m.

considering you are a tourist and will be hanging out in touristy places, 1 would add another 30% to the cost above

As long as a tourist can read, it's not that difficult to find meal deals in any area.

Or if you drink beer at the same local places you eat then $10-20 for a 600ml bottle. If budget is an issue then don't even think about buying beer in the rip-off bars in Lan Kwai Fong and other "expat" areas. You could buy your beer in 7-11 and hang out in the street there.

Just stayed for a couple of days and usually meals are around $35 to $50 with drink. So eating 3 times a day would bring you around $100 to $150.

But note that $35-50 meals in local restaurants are almost always stuffed full of MSG, so unless you know you have a well-developed tolerance to that then you might want to budget a bit more to eat in places that don't feel the need to f**k up your taste buds (and in my case at least given me a very nasty hangover effect) with additives.

A tourist may also do touristy things, so you should also add the cost for transportation (say a ride on the Peak Tram, Ngong Ping Cable car), entrance fees to museums etc.

Or really go for uber-local and eat at McDonalds.
