Electrical Goods - WIll they work?

I am moving for Syd and was wondering whether any of my electrical goods will work in HK? For instance my computer and TV?

Yep, just get a AUS-UK plug converter... it's quite cheap.

or cut off the plug and put a local plug on the cord. for computers, just buy a local cord.

voltage etc is essentially the same...

Clarify which way you are moving? Are you moving TO Sydney or TO HK?

TV:HK PAL I Aus:PAL B/G

Computer:
IEC type removable cord[ buy a new cord/ cut & relace the plug]
chargers for mobile etc [things that can't cut & relace the plug] :
OZ powerboard + plug: cut & relace [OZ to UK ]

NEVER use any AUS-UK plug converter
Fire risk -if shorts occur, a 32A MCB won't trip before that thinny wire catch fire!!! -poor connection

Honey, I'm a third generation expat, and I've moved around all my life... I usually cut cords but also use a lot of plug converters, and I've never heard of any fires started by plug converters....

radial vs ring main
British BS1363 "ring main" is a different animal [30A!!!] . In order to protect the thinny flex right amperage "bs1362 fuse" must in the plugtop!!!

Sorry to clarift, I am moving from Sydney to Hong Kong.

My idea potentially was to bring an AUS powerboard (i.e. one where I have 4 sockets), plug that into the wall using a converted. And then just using all my AUS appliances through that? Will that work, or is there a chance of a short circuit?

In addition, a friend told me it might not be safe for me to bring my Plasma back as it might overheat and blow up?

What you propose with the powerboard will work fine.

For your plasma I can't see why there would be a problem... Australia is 220V 50Hz isn't it? That's the same as Hong Kong.

in regards to power boards, as PDLM says, there will be no problem. I have about 3 of them as you describe - aussie power board, UK plug. Dont forget the power boards are only rated to about 10amps, so a few mobile phone chargers, a computer etc is all you should stick on one board. Check the wattage (10 amps = 2200-2400watts) of your appliances and make sure you're under 10amps.

travel adaptors ARE tricky, especially for Aussie 3 pin sockets. the contacts rarely form a nice flat contact with the adaptor, and generally spark when you wiggle them. sockets from other countries a little safer as they seem to contact better inside.

your best options really are to cut the cord and put a new plug on, as well as the power board thingy

and yes, HK is roughly the same as Oz power (220-240V, 50Hz)
