    guidelines for work permits

    Hi

I am looking for a job in Hong Kong and I have been asked to go in for an interview. They are checking whether or not they can get me a visa, but have asked what my salary requirements are.

My question is: is there a salary minimum for work permits/visa in Hong Kong? I know that in Singapore the salary must be a minimum of $2,500 a month for an employment pass. Does Hong Kong have a similiar rule?

Additionally, what are the specific requirements for work permits?

    Thanks for the help.

There isn't a hard limit on salary, but your employer must be able to persuade the immigration department that you have some particular skills or knowledge which cannot be sourced from the local population. This might be anything from speaking a language which they need and almost no locals speak, or having experience of a market they are trying to export to, or having specialist technical skills, ... It is easier if you are being transferred by a multinational company who can simply argue that they need someone with experience in the other offices of that company. It also helps if your job description includes training locals in whatever it is that you have which is difficult to find.

Having said that, the higher the salary the employer is prepared to offer the easier it tends to be. If it is above HK$100,000 per month then I would say you would have no problem at all, and if it is below HK$15,000 per month then you will have to really have some specific skill or knowledge.
