Call it what it is - SMOG

We have all heard the arguments and seen with our own eyes how bad the visibility here in HK can be due to pollution. The govt. constantly re-names it as haze or mist but as this picture shows better than any I have ever seen before - it is nothing but smog.

This picture was from the HK Tourism Board web cam on the Peak and for a change you can actually see the layer of brown rather than having the entire landscape obliterated by white out pollution.

Without it we would have a lovely city all year round.

It isn't smog - smog is a combination of SMoke and fOG, which requires a high level of humidity. It is actually a mixture of smoke (the carbon-based particulates) and a simple chemical cloud (the nitrogen and sulphur oxides). The brown colour comes largely from nitrogen dioxide.

I am glad you said that. I am also a Londoner and the pollution here really does not bother me. I hardly notice it. My lungs are already f****d despite being a non-smoker by dint of 40 years in London. No 'pea-soupers' here. How can I complain with temperatures in the mid 20's and blue skies in November? HK - I love it!

Now, noise pollution, that's another story...

I'm not so sure the goal of having a killer fog roll in off the harbor is particularly worthwhile. But to each his own.
