Moving to HK soon - costs

    Hi,

I have just accepted a teaching job in Tsuen Wan and will be moving to HK in October. I just wondered what the monthly living cost is - roughly! I realise this is a broad question, but some ideas as to how much you all spend would be quite helpful.

    Thanks :-)

I think you need to provide a little bit more information about yourself as the responses you will get to such a general query will be too broad to be really useful. I know people who spend less than 10K per month to those who easily spend over 150K per month.

Would you be willing to flat share? Is it just yourself or spouse and kids trailing along? What kind of lifestyle do you want? Close to town? Going out a lot?

Just me! I want to find a flat share within commuting distance to Tsuen wan. I do like to socialise so a couple of nights out a week for drinks n food. Happy to cook the rest of the time. I also want to join a gym! Will also need to get a HK SIM card just for keeping in touch with people I meet when I get there.

It boggles the mind that someone wouldn't have done this research before accepting a job that involves moving to a notoriously expensive city.

    Huja,

I am young, love to travel and obviously did a little research before. I am just trying to find out a bit more now I have accepted it. I like to be spontaneous, nothing wrong with that!

Still no details from you on the job, your lifestyle, etc.

Do you take taxis, buses, stay out all night, drink 1 drink or 10, eat instant noodles or steaks.

Do you want a nice new clean flat or a dump. You can live in a cage for about HK $1500 per month, yeah they have those here.

I don't know why you would come here and work in Tsuen Wan. If you want the expat and youth going out life, you should aim to work on HK island and also live there too.

Good luck. Please post an update after you've been in HKG a few months. Cost-of-living questions are common and very few people follow up with how things turn out. I think it would be very useful for others making the move to HKG to read a follow up.

15 to 20 K a month minimum for a halfway decent lifestyle occasional coffee and decent meal : occasional night out .excluding rent: It's important for your budget to live close to your job : you may even get lucky and be able to walk as tsuen wan is lower rent residential . Sharing is not common here as the flats are tiny your living way way too close to a flatmate : better to try for a small independent. Unit or service . Enjoy Hong Kong it's an interesting place .

    Here is a useful reference : https://hongkong.geoexpat.com/articl...of-living-2014

If you can keep your accommodation costs down then you should be ok.
