Freelance writing - How much am I worth?

Depends on the topic. We use about 5-6 freelancers at any time. The best rates would be for complex topics involving a fair amount of research. The best output that I can find is from US based librarians.

We pay between US$ 50-75 for a 1000-1200 word article.

Hong Kong is a bit strange though. There is a shortage of good writers with local knowledge. Most of the locals can barely string a sentence together to save their lives, if they have graduated in the last 4 or 5 years.

Having said that, I've found the quality of writers in Hong Kong fairly disappointing when it comes to features and guide book type copy.

There are a few good people doing marcom copy and a few who make decent money doing it on a freelance / consulting basis.

Since it's been difficult getting a job here as an illustrator, I'll consider alternatives as well.

Despite professors commending my art and informing me that 2d illustrators are difficult to find in hong kong, offerings have been slim.

Editorials seem to be more plentiful, and when the Engrish here ABOUNDS I think Hong Kong would benefit greatly with a grammatical facelift.
