usually if you depart HK before dec 15 and return after jan 5 or so, you will get a better deal. flying direct is usually much more expensive...
but really, there is no CHEAP way to do it, ESPECIALLY at peak times such as christmas.

NEVER cheaper if you buy two tickets... big deal, everyone that has a family would be flying all over the place if that were the case!
HOWEVER, if you have over 10 people flying together, same itinerary, then one person goes free... at least that was the deal about 5 years ago. so, if you could find a bunch of people wanting to go at the same time, then you could all get tickets together and average out the savings from the free ticket.
exactly what i was thinking... even if he had the money, i'm guessing there are not many seats left.
My tip for cheap flights at Christmas is to fly on Christmas day. Doing it this year too - using asia miles which are usually a good indication there are still cheap seats available. Come back on New Year's day or be in the air at midnight.
Cathay has just launched some special fares to Toronto.
Fare is $7690+taxes for departure on or before 12 December, $8740 for departure 13-19 December (over 13K for 20 Dec on). Tickets must be booked by 30 November. Minimum stay 3 days, maximum 21 days.
Full details on their website.
And I booked with Air Canada to take advantage of their deals and got screwed with the HK$ being 6.00+ at the time, but the deadline got me.
I think I got $7942HK which is brutal compared to June/July this year given the hefty fuel surcharge of some $1600HK. With oil falling this might help a bit but I'd not hold my breath.
I didn't look into flying from China though but I'd be interested in knowing if anyone does and how it worked out cost and time wise.
If you fly from SZ I assume you need that $150HK Visa.
