Effectively yes. There are only a few schools that cater to minorities in HK, all the minorities get sent there and don't get any extra tuition in Cantonese meaning they all graduate school unable to speak or write Cantonese and can't then get decent jobs.

See the charity UNISON for more details on this.

    Dude, yes.

Wife has run a program for several years (and now study the subject for her PHD) in a school on how to integrate minority children into HK mainstream school....waste/complex issue and one that is not very often spoken about since the majority don't really give a shit.

But am sure you will tell me otherwise and we will get an endless debate here on geo.

Well you are not red-headed and not white. Two out of three isn't bad.

So this goes back to my earlier post...and yes, I know about UNISON and their work.

1.) On one hand we have people saying they can get by perfectly well with English...why doesn't that apply to Pakistani families?

2.) Pakistani children are free to join whatever school they like. As I pointed out earlier, many children are born here and still can't speak Cantonese at kindergarten age. Why? I blame the parents for this. And, it puts a huge demand on local schools (I do think they should go to local schools, ultimately it's the parents choice.).

*disclaimer* I know it's not easy...I know some children arrive already at school age.

My point is that it is possible to make it as many do.

Further, there are plenty of local children that have 'no hope' too...

As far as I'm concerned, if you come here and your children can't speak Cantonese by age three, it's your fault.

I don't need to debate with you Mat...I work in local schools and have seen first hand the issues. Pakistani kids are not segregated and are free to join local schools.

Not saying it's easy...but it is done, and that proves there is no segregation.
