I got few responses so far, either they want me to start too soon (can't wait few months for me to get all my 'steps' in action) or we couldn't agree upon the salary. In most case, I think I am over qualify for most of the jobs that I applied. (they only require 2 to 5 years of experience). And of course, a lot of them I will not even try if the offer is too low.

As far as the side business, I don't know what to do yet, just want to take my time and do more research when I am in HK, to see what is in demand or may have a demand for.

For me, I rather go thru this with at least few months period. That way, it will be easier to handle and easier to back out (if things didn't work out). I think my first step is a job, and then I will be moving to Hk by myself for few months. Then, maybe buy a flat , then sell my house in Jersey, and ask my wife to quit....

One thing that I worry the most, is the housing market in Jersey. Not knowing if I can still afford to buy a house if I need to move back from HK.

    Wid,

In a couple of months, I will leave Canada for HK. I can see what u mean since I experienced the same things. Usually those IT Co. they need people to fill the pos. right away and I don't blame them. THat's why I would delay until a couple of weeks before I took off. But the thing that bothers me the most is the "over-qualify" thing...

Would u mind telling me what kind of salary range you would get out of those 2-5 yrs exp job? my guess it would be only 20-30K? if that's the case, it is way too low. Did you have job interview over the phone or? what was the format? how is it different from those we have in North America? I've heard people need to bring in some kind of references or testimonials or whatever crap...

    >> I remember til 12:30am, the mini-bus stops servicing that area, if it is still true now.

The Baguio bus service stops a bit earlier. $50-60 ride in from Central or $60ish from Causeway bay via the tunnel.

You can always cut down the taxi ride by taking a bus to Pokfulam Road / Queen Mary etc.

Hong Kong interviews can be very different and bizzare depending on where you're from and who is doing the interview. Most of the discrimination laws, that prevent US interviewers from asking 'important' questions do not exist here in HK.

You mean to say your HR department in the US does not run criminal / credit checks on potential employees?

This really depends where your application was sourced from. When we've used top end recruiters, we expect them to have done that checking, before the first interview. Also, people who have come recommended from trusted sources rarely need to bring their degree certificates in. The more "experienced" you are, the less documentation you'd be required to provide.

I remember when I went to interviews in HK 6 years ago, people were not interested with your work experiences, they were more interested in your personal life and all the gossips from your existing company.......bizarre side of the world. Also, from memory you have to send your photograph together with your applications. People in HK got their photos done at "Jim Jim" where all your blemishes are touched up. I guess you can do it yourself now and look perfect with the digital camera.

We used to do competitive intelligence interviews.. happens all the time across the board, when you're looking at building some intelligence on who is doing what in the industry.

Done it in the US and done it here in Asia.

Also, if the candidate could not respect their confidentiality agreements and continued to give us information.. we'd take the information, but definately strike the candidate of the shortlist.

In my exp, I'd never bring in any kind of documents regarding my qualifications. I just need to provide name of references and the employers or job agents will then call them up.

Cool Any jobs for a singaporean?

    Guys and Girls out there,

I really need your help!... I am worrying that I cant find a job in hongkong. I need to go there as my wife for the past 10 years is from hongkong and well in order to have a baby she wants it to be delivered in hongkong and not singapore. My family here is too boring and so is singapore but in Hongkong it is full of life and fun there. But I need to be realistic in life, any jobs out there in Hongkong ready to accept a Singaporean?
