    Chinese domestic helper?

We are moving from the mainland and are hoping to maintain our primary-aged children's fluent mandarin level by having a domestic helper that speaks Chinese. Is it possible in HK to hire a helper like this without paying significantly more?

No. You can hire any nationality except Chinese Residents of the Mainland, Macao and Taiwan as well as nationals of Afghanistan, Cuba, Laos, Korea (Democratic People's Republic of), Nepal and Vietnam as domestic helpers. You either need to find a Filipino maid who can speak Mandarin or hire a tutor.

Yea , you can't hire a full-time, live in Chinese domestic helper. We had a part-time aunty/helper, originally from the mainland but married to a local, whom we paid $80 an hour for 3 hours/day and 3 days per week. Maybe you could find someone like this and negotiate $ if you want longer hours.

I honestly can't see why you wouldn't be able to hire anyone you want to help you at home. But it won't be as cheap as 5K a month for a poor Indonesian/Filipina

    No it's not possible.

Domestic helpers are from overseas and on a specific visa, it's limited to certain countries and China isn't one of them.

You can find local (as in have a HK passport or visa) cleaners, nannies, babysitters but they are around $80-100 an hour, some might be Mandarin speakers.

But if the concern is your children's language then you are after a Mandarin nanny or tutor and they go for $150-250 an hour. You can easily find this but they will only care for the children, they won't do domestic work at all.

Nowadays there are so many Mainlanders who are permanent residents in HK. If you are willing to pay price they sure are willing to live in as a helper. Expect 20k+

Keep it separate. Hire someone with language and early childhood skills for Mandarin, and then get an overseas helper for the other stuff.
