For yourself, the simple answer is long life milk does not have chemicals added. It is Ultra Heat Treated (UHT) also known as Ultra-Pasteurized. It gets it’s long life from being heated up to a much higher temperature than normal milk. But only until the box is first opened. Then it has to be used up in a few days like normal milk.

The main difference is in the taste. UHT milk usually has a ‘burnt’ flavor to it that some people (me included) do not like but others don’t mind.

The more complicated answer is, well, complicated. It has to do with the inside lining of Tetra Pak boxes being plastic rather than paper and some brands adding things to make the milk taste less ‘burnt’.

For your baby I would use formula until s/he is 1 year old. Mix the same formula you are currently using into the baby cereal, not fresh or UHT milk yet. If you aren’t using formula, start first with breast milk and then use a formula for a few of months as a transition.

it won't make a jot of difference what you use. (except maybe for breast feeding, because that really does have benefit).

All the rest is just marketing spin. Just relax and feed it whatever is convenient and you can afford. You won't be doing any harm.

My sister and I were fed (from pretty young I am told but I don't know exactly) exactly what my parents ate, only mashed up. We turned out fine!

First food - try a Rice Cereal and mix a bit of formula/breast milk. We used to buy Healthy Times , but there are so many other brands available now. You don't need to give them cereal for long. You can introduce different fruits and veggies after a few days. We started with pears. Also read up on Baby Lead Weaning. It's easier and you follow your child's queues. Remember for the first year milk is still your baby's main source of nutrition.

After a year we introduced UHT milk. You can buy cases from the Indian shops. They have so many different brands - Paul's, Devondale, Meadow Fresh, Harvey Fresh. Avoid Dairy Farm milk. It's from China and my son broke out in a full body rash with it.

Also, invest in a good pair of food scissors. When you're out in restaurants, the kids are usually eating the same food as the parents. They just cut it up with the scissors.
