    Assaulted on MTR

Can’t believe I’m writing, but yesterday evening I got assaulted on the MTR from Mongkok to Admiralty.

Was at the Flower Market in Prince Edwards with my girlfriend, and around 4pm we head back to Admiralty. At Yau Ma Tei I very aggressively approached by a drug addict yelling and screaming that I have to put on my mask on the proper way. Why did I know he was a heroin junk, I saw the needle track marks around his veins, and he was unhealthy skinny.

I realized that I should just ignore it, seeing with junkies it can escalate from 40 to 100 very quickly. Guy kept on screaming right in my face. It wasn’t even about the mask anymore. He kept on yelling ‘I’m an Afghan, look at my cigarettes they come from my country!’ and ‘My nose is bigger than yours’. It was escalating, I would not get physical with people who are that high on drugs. My girlfriend was holding me back, once he touched my face a shoulder.

Arrived at Jordan, and I basically got pushed out by this piece of shit junk. Was probably for the best… Took the next train, and I knew he would be waiting for me at the next station. There he was, hitting the windows of the train, yelling at other people. I was hoping he would not see me, but I was not that lucky. Told my girlfriend to keep her phone ready to call the police.

Guy was yelling crap about Afghanistan, and how much of a dirty foreigner I am. Touched my shoulder again. He got distracted by another dirty foreigner, and start walking back and forth and hitting windows, and walls of the train. He dropped something, little pouched with his syringe and heroin. I told him he dropped his stuff, which made him more pissed off. He started talking crap ‘I know where you live, I will slice you open and will cut your head off’. Other passengers were running away. I made eye contact with two other passengers, in case it goes down, they would help me. I kept my eyes on his hands to see what he was getting out of his pockets. In case it was a knife, I was prepared. My adrenaline was pumping…

Once arrived in Admiralty, I asked my girlfriend to see if he was following us, and there he was. I was his target for the evening. Guy was a bit behind and was running. We were on our way to the MTR security, whatever you want to call them. I asked my girlfriend to walk in front me, and let me know when he was around 1.5m behind me. I’ve put a key between my fingers and made a fist. In case he would try to hit/stab me, I could give him one blow to get him on the ground. Again, I don’t get violent, but my girlfriend and my safety was in jeopardy, so I was ready to defend myself. Was not thinking of the consequences, I don’t want get stabbed by some trash junkie.

Thank god I reached the MTR people, and told them what happened. They called the police, but obviously piece of trash was gone. He had nothing to do in Admiralty, he was just following me. Police made a report, but that’s it.

Called a few friends who live around TST, and Jordan, and they told me there is a concerning increase in violence by refugees.

Yup, yup happy days in Hong Kong. No more MTR to Mongkok for me. Not sure if I should follow up with the police, but that would be pointless I assume.

Don't they have CCTV on the MTR?

They did, but seeing I was not injured, they were not that helpful...

I would actually try and speak to the police again, perhaps to another officer or supervisor. What he did still constitutes an assault, as there was physical contact and it was clearly threatening. Not to mention the emotional distress, if you go by precedents in case law (altho I'm not a lawyer)

In my experience of reporting a crime, you need the police to request the cctv for mtr to submit to them. If you kick up a bit of a fuss, you've got nothing to lose at this point

Why waste your time? I would have gone out at the first MTR station and taken a bus

I'm considering it. Police was friendly, they wrote a report, I gave as many details as possible, from his Jaws shirt to his neckless. Police wanted to escort us out of the MTR, but I told to go downstairs to look for the guy. I assume they don't take this things serious, unless serious injuries are involved.

It happened to me, but he was harassing other people as well, I was his main target though.

Sorry you and your girlfriend had to go through this, it sounds terrifying. Whenever anyone asks me what is good about HK, I say it's a safe place. And generally it is of course, but incidents like this paint a different picture.

I wanted to take an Uber once he forced me to get out of the MTR. I had a feeling he would be waiting at the next station, and so he did. Couldn't believe it, thought this only happened in movies...

First time in my ten years in HK, something like this happened. I was at the wrong place at the wrong time... This guy was so high on heroin, he was living in his own world. He saw me, and something triggered him to assault me.

Sorry to hear about the experience, but yes walking away (and taking the bus if needed) would have been a safer play. For as long as the police are mandated to enforce cap 599 and parking tickets above all else then this will creep in. The statement taking process is a disaster if you don't speak canto but I still think you should report it so they at least acknowledge it in the stats.

Nowhere near as aggressive, but I also got properly hassled on the way to a bar in Jordan a couple of Fridays ago walking from the MTR and through what's left of temple street market. In this case a guy (with wife and baby in pushchair in tow) at first saying he was from Syria and asking for money for baby food and then getting more and more insistent and grabbing at my sleeves and shouting about “why you don't look” etc. Went on for a good 150 metres or so before they stopped following.

Honestly I didn't initially believe there were real refugees here as I presumed our overlords would stick anyone who tried to come in straight back on a plane. Friends tell me there are some... seems an odd choice to head this way frankly. I presume there is some organised crime element exploiting people somewhere along the chain.
