With no degree...

I am wondering....with out a degree being a me saying "street smart person" always finds a way to get by type of guy....well i am wondering, how easy or hard would it be to get a job with out a degree in HK? I have been teaching english in China for a year now but i know that i do not qualify in HK. Well does anyone have any ideas? i want to move to HK just for the hell of it, find a roomate and see what happens...

Hey. I know it is quite difficult to find a teaching job here as I have met a few people who have been here for, literally, months and have yet to find a secure job at it. They are teaching during the weekends, but as for a full time job, you will need to research a bit.

As for finding a roommate, I'm guessing you are looking for company/price efficiency. I'm staying at a youth hostel at TST (nathan rd) which is a fairly good location (near MRT, ferry etc.) and you can request staying a dormitory-type room. The price is 60 HKD (about 8 USD) a night and from my experience, the travellers who stay there are very interesting people--some who are staying there long term too.

The name of the hostel is New Garden and Kowloon hotel. The quality is fairly low, but you get AC, cheap laundry service, and a place to stay, which is fine for me.

i was in the same boat as you...i came here with no degree, only a tesol certificate and a little experience as a corporate trainer. I was lucky, work my ass off, and after 2 yrs got a great job in an intl. school (still not sure how i pulled that off) but I think my attitude may have made the difference. no offense, but you don't sound too serious about making teaching your profession...just something to pay the bills while you hang out and check out the scene here.

i hope you don't go into an interview showing that cuz your hopes of landing any kind of decent job will be slim to none...

if you can sell yourself as an enthusiastic, knowledgeable person who cares about what they're doing and are willing to work like a dog, you should be able to find something, esp. with a year of teaching in China (though experience on the mainland doesn't mean much to employers here in general)

try the local language institutes first, they are less inclined to require a degree, and may be more willing to fudge the rules to get you a work visa.
