When will it be better to give lai see?

This will be my first Chinese New Year in HK.
I'll take a long trip during the whole Chinese New Year holidays week.
I want to give lai see to my concierges, but don't know when will be more appropriate time to do so.
Before the trip (it will be 24th, Saturday) or after the trip (in this case, it will be on 1st February)?
    thanks!

Thank you for the replies! I'll do after the trip

On the 1st. You can give out laisee up to two weeks after the first day of CNY.

speaking of this custom, do i have to give the packets to people who are junior to me at work? or is it just my boss who does this?

the trainee who sits in my office claims that she is expecting some cash from me.

You only give out Lai See if your Married or a Boss. Some people will try to trick people who are not familiar and tell them that as they are higher in Position, they also need to give out Lai See. It is up to you in the end if you want to give or not.

All the single girls try this on. If I had a $1 for every time that I fell for that line ... I would have $42. As Jimbo says only if you're married and they are single OR you're a proper manager.

Though there is the unwritten rule (in my social group) that goes "no lai see after one week".
Makes sen$e to me. The CNY feeling has all but dimished by then anyway. If the (begging) recipient was away before CNY and is still away the week after then they must be loaded. And they may have planned to go away, get the overseas lai see, come back and get the local lai see - you may laugh but it's true and I know atleast two people who did this.
But if there is someone who you think is deserving then go ahead if it makes you feel all warm inside. I have done this and it was only $20.

heh, at present its the married ones that are trying it on (along with the single ones). I am neither married nor a proper manager, so i guess i'm ok this year.
