my parents came to Canada in the 1970's to go to school...by the time this bundle of joy
was born in 1984 they were both Canadian citizens.
My dad got his HK SAR passport after 1997...when I went to apply for my passport I was denied because I was born in a foreign country. I have 3 stars on my HK ID card.
Any way to fight this?

as far as i know you'd have to give up your canadian passport to get the hksar one. this is not because canada doesn't allow dual citizenship(which it does), but because hk doesn't allow dual citizenship (not residence).
check it out on the immig website, or give thema call or send them an email. they'd be able to help you more than people on this forum!

Why do you need a HKSAR passport anyways? You can use your HKID to find a job, and a Canadian passport for travel, no? That's what I do, anyways.

I'm not sure. But I think once you renounce your Canadian citizenship, you'd have to go through necessary immigration procedures to get it back again.

I think you need to check with your consulate. It is unlikely that they will give it back to you and if they do it would be a MAJOR hassle. Originally Posted by Becks23:

Answering your question, Becks23:
1) The 3 stars symbol on your HKPIC (or HKIC) means you are entitled to a "Re-Entry Permit"
2) Those entitled to the Permit include:
(i) Non-Chiense nationals who are PR in HK, but nonetheless cannot get any other travel docs or passports
(ii) Chinese PRs in HK.
3) Presumably, you are qualified for the Canadian passport. If that's the case, then assuming you are entitled to the "3 stars" symbol on the PIC, you are a Chinese citizen, and you can get a HKSAR passport
4) However, the *** symbol may not always be correct- the immigration dept may make mistakes.
If you were born in Canada, and one of your parents was a Canadian citizen/permanent resident WHEN YOU WERE BORN, and WHEN YOU WERE BORN, YOU BECAME A CANADIAN CITIZEN automatically --> This means you are NOT a chinese citizen, and thus NOT entitled to the HKSAR passport

to Get the HKSAR passport, you must
1) Apply for Chinese nationality )Through Immd in HK)
2) Renounce your Canadian citizenship
I think it costs over $3000 for you to gain Chiense nationality. I'm not sure about the costs for renoucning Canadian citizenship
note, however, that the process for applying fo CHinese citizenshp may be long (at least 3 months, as I've heard)

From what I know, it is possible to resume Canadian citizenship after renuciation. You would first have to be admitted for permanent residence like anyone else. You can do this either through the skilled immigration scheme (which is almost impossible for someone our age) or have your parents sponsor you. After one year of residing in Canada as a permanent resident, you can get your Canadian citizenship back.
I'm thinking just applying for Chinese citizenship once I have lived in Hong Kong for seven years and acquired the right of abode. I'm a Canadian national of Chinese descent with the right to land in Hong Kong. I'll probably hand in an application for naturalisation and see if they ask me to renounce my current citizenship. If I have to present proof, then I will cancel the application.
I remember on the guide, it said that all approved applicants shall not retain foreign nationality. It never mentioned anything about presenting a document to show that you have renounced your foreign nationality.

It has crossed my mind too, if I decide to stay here long enough. How much of a sure thing is it when you apply for chinese citizenship? It'd sort of suck renouncing your current one and then being rejected for chinese citizenship
