    Working Girl in China

yes i know the title makes that sound like opne of "those types" of girls....but its not

i am moving to hong kong, and i am trying to get my girlfriend to move with me. I know it would probably be easier to find a job while she is there....

but she wants to find one before she goes, otherwise she might not go.

Would it be easy for her to find a job from america?

She has a BA in Graphic Design with minor in East Asian Studies (Japan).
She is a chinese american, who speaks fluent english/mandarin and a little cantonese.

She has a few years experience in web design, graphic design, page layout, package design, bag design.

She doesnt want to take a teaching job.
She only wants something related to her field....

    is this gonna happen?
    where can she look?
how easy would it be to find a job if she went there to look?
Is it tough because she doesnt have a work permit?

thanks for the help...i just really would like her to go with me.....

a very clever title to the thread I must say, that will catch people's attention and get them to check it out for sure.

Sorry I can't be of any help with your question.

Not impossible but unlikely, she needs to be on the ground to improve her chances.

    ...my 2 cents

sort her out with a working visa first and i'm sure that she'll get a decent job as she speaks canto/mandarin...good luck!!...remember-one step at a time...

In my knowledge, you can only get a working visa AFTER you have a job.

Lots of top end graphics design agencies in HK. I would not worry too much about it, assuming she is good and has a good portfolio.

Best option is to get here and spend a few weeks networking and interviewing.

and good knowledge you have got, gatts!

mattstewart may not be thick enough to understand that his girl needs to get a job before getting a working visa..or do i really have to put it down step-by-step??

I was in a similar position. I think that it would be easier to find a job whilst you are in HK but there is definitely no harm in sending out your Resume to prospective employers/employment agencies. Try the employment agencies to get a flavour of the local job market.
Worst case scenario - if she gets no job then she can travel, explore Asia, or go home.
I found getting a job difficult because I didnt have a working visa + no mandarin/cantonese. But if your girlfriend has chinese then this should make life easier. Plus she will be on a local contract which means low annual leave (maybe 7-10 days?).

    yeah.... im not thick....lol

i know that she needs a job to get the working visa....
thats why i was asking......if it would be easy for her to find one there....

i will try to convince her to try it...
i was just hoping someone knew of how i can find her a job while she is hear in USA before she gets there.

    thanks though

is the market for designers good right now in HK?

i know in boston and NYC it is absolutly horrible....extremely difficult to find one
