Dont forget to budget in your income tax
depends how much you drink, what sort of expensive hobbies you have and how much you want to spend travelling away on weekends..
From your post I take you are single and have no dependents to support back home. Assuming that to be true, the amount you're quoting will allow you a comfortable expat life style in HK, including drinking, shopping and the like. That being said, there are plenty of expensive restaurants and drinking establishments but you will find that in the Rocks or at Opera Quay, for instance, and you wouldn't go there every night, would you? Travelling in the region is relatively inexpensive (Thailand, Vietnam, China) and flight to Oz are getting ever cheaper with Virgin putting pricing pressure on the likes of Cathay and Quantas. In many countries a big chunk of salary goes to paying for car-related expenses, which you won't need to budget for here. Public transport is cheap for Sydney standards although many of the locals here (inexplicably to me) complain about the price of the MTR.
All the islands have now fast ferry service, and in DB you can have your sailing boat on the beach (at least you could have 10 years ago). But you have to factor the ferry in, which is quite expensive for DB.
I saved on the rent here and didn't need a mortgage at home to buy a house. It might not be financially wise to pay everything in cash, but I don't need to worry about any payments in the future.
And income tax is cheap here - max 17% on your gross salary.
Thanks everyone for your responses. It looks like I should be able to have a good life and travel around a bit. I am looking forward to the move.
The income tax is 16% max, 17.5% for corporationsOriginally Posted by Expatriate:
