For the same reason you live in HK without 6.5 million? Why did YOU choose to live in HK?

It is cheap, but what is the attraction to living in Macau?

To get into Canada: make an investment of at least C$800,000 for 5 years (about HK$5.3million)
To get into Australia: make an investment of at least A$750,000 in Australian bonds for 4 years, about HK$4.3million.
To get into USA: Very complex formula , the value depends on the unemployment figures of the region you want ot invest in, and whether the country you are from is part of some trade treaty. Can range from US$1million to US$500K

    So, yeah, HK is expensive!

I've only been to Macau once for a half day, and it seems very tiny.

However, it does offer a few advantages for me.

    They speak Cantonese.

    It's close to HK.

Say, does anyone know of people who live in Macau and travel to HK daily or for work etc?

Well, I personally moved from Macau to HK for my job, and I have to admit, I do not regret the move at all (nevertheless I believe some ppl enjoy liviing in Macau and therefore might be interested to buy residency there) but I do know some ppl who travel everyday between the 2 cities, living in Macau and working in HK, the opposite is also true...I know a few british ppl who argued that the education system was too bad in Macau for their kids and negociated for the company to live with their family in HK and commute everyday to Macau for their job.

Yes, you can live quite comfortably in China with $6.5m HKD. But the downside is, you're living in China. China is still a third-world nation with an underdeveloped financial and legal infrastructure. Clearly, living in Hong Kong is more comfortable and inviting, especially for people accustomed to English and Western comforts.

Of course, this investment visa scheme is not for ordinary people. It's for those who readily has $800,000 USD to sink into real estate and looking for a comfy place to retire or live. And there are lots of them out there, especially in California with its real estate bubble!
