Regulations Cause German Beer Shortage

New German regulations requiring deposits on cans set to take effect in January may cause a beer shortage in a land known for its Beck's and beerhalls.
"We may not have enough beer available to meet the demand in January," Jan Holzweissig, spokesman for the German retailers' association, told Reuters. "A lot of stores are planning to remove beer and other drinks in disposable containers off their shelves next month because of the new rules."

New German regulations requiring depositson cans set to take effect in January may cause a beer shortage in a land known for its Beck's and beerhalls.

This was a temporary issue, which indeed resulted in a shortage of beer --> but not in Germany. After cans were pulled off the shelves in Germany, people stocked up on beer cans in border towns of neighboring countries; I lived in the Netherlands at the time and there were stories in the newspapers of supermarkets being bought 'dry' by cross-border shoppers.
