    HK Police

    Hi everyone,

If any one here is knowledgeable about the various HK law enforcement agencies, could you please send me a private message? I might be relocating to HK in the near future and am thinking about applying to be a police inspector there (either with the HK police or immigration dept). And yes, I'm a HK permanent resident and have prior experience as a patrol officer in the big apple.

Just trying to get a more accurate picture of what the HK police is like from the locals...

    Thanks!

I'd like to join the HK police, but I have to learn how to write Chinese first. Not a simple task.

Recruitment info are available thru their official website, including quailfication requirement, fitness test details and selection procedures. Some forces only recruit for a period of time every year. The police is a popular choice and they interview people year round...

From what I've heard from ex Brit cops .. if you're not chinese, there is very little you can do to advance up the ranks. Not sure if it is a case of genuine discrimination or if it is just a case of sour grapes.

Interesting KIA...I recently saw a Pakistani (I believe) HK Police constable. I can see how keeping the minorities down might become common practice now. There are still several high ranking gweilos in the HK Police though.

jayinhong kong: I was born in Hong Kong but it's more than 10 years ago since the last time I was there. I speak Cantonese as my first language but can't write Chinese at all. I'm a HK permanent resident (I have that "3 star" thingie on the ID card) but I'm of mixed race (half Chinese/half Puerto Rican). Would this be a problem also?

I can't imagine the HK police wouldn't want to hire an ex-NYPD cop, but I guess the langauge requirement could be an issue. Also, physically I look more Latin than East Asian...

I might need to return to HK for a personal reason in the near future (long story). I don't have much substantial work experience other than in law enforcement field. The only skill I ever learned is how to be a cop, so I just can't think of anything else to do in HK besides that...I'm just not too good at desk jobs. I have a BA degree from a decent university in the US, 5 years working in a command in the Manhattan south boro, extremely patient working with kids...oh yeah, and probably the only Asian chick who can drive past 80mph

I'll call the HK police recruitment hotline and let you know what I find out.

oh, btw, how high is the crime rate in HK? The command that I used to work in is no south bronx or bed-stuy, but we got our fair share of "drama." The image I got from HK is mainly from the movies - is Wan chai really as dangerous as some of you describe?

    Thanks for all you reply!

Hi Mercedes. They would totally let you in, but not being able to write Chinese is a major impediment. With your experience, you should totally give it a shot anyway. Let us know how it works out.

Manhattan South huh? I went to NYU...

The crime rate here is significantly lower than in New York. Criminals here usually don't have firearms. When they do, they're usually Chinese-made and of poor quality. You also have a lot more power here than in NY. You can stop and search someone or their vehicle at any time. You can also ID someone at any time. If they don't have ID on them, you can detain them until someone brings their ID down; alternatively, you can escort them to their home to get it. There are lots of other differences I can think of. PM me or AIM me if you wanna know.
